This April IT publications the world over will be readying obituaries for one of the worlds most successful and popular operating systems, Windows XP.

First released in December 2001 and now superseded by no less than three more recent versions, Microsoft's Windows XP operating system is finally reaching the end of it's lifespan. A decade is a long time for a single iteration of an OS, even taking into account three service packs and numerous minor updates, so it's hardly surprising that Microsoft has finally decided to pull that plug.

What Does This Mean?

With the exception of a small number of organizations who hold special support agreements with Microsoft, security patches and updates will no longer be produced for Windows XP, nor will new hardware be certified and approved. The security aspect is perhaps the most critical consideration as any flaws or security holes that are uncovered after Microsoft's April cut off date simply won't be addressed by the company, leaving users who elect to remain with Windows XP vulnerable.

For many organizations the impending end of Windows XP support has been the impetus to update desktops and devices to newer versions of Microsoft operating systems. If you're reading this now and contemplating moving away from Windows XP, you've left your run quite late as, at time of writing, official support for Windows XP ends in just under 8 weeks time.

Updating an operating system also means considering whether existing hardware and software tools will be compatible with the new operating system. For Turbosoft users it's business as usual, our desktop terminal emulator TTWin 4 supports Windows XP and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. If you plan to retain Windows XP within your organization, you'll be supported.

TTWin is Windows 7 and Windows 8 compatible

For those updating to a more modern operating system, TTWin 4 is also certified Windows 7® compatible and Windows 8® compatible. So, as old copies of Windows XP are phased out, you will be able to simply continue to work with TTWin 4 in their new Windows environments.
