Apple’s iPad is making strong inroads into the enterprise tablet market, according to new research by Good Technology. The mobile management vendor revealed recently that in the fourth quarter of 2013, the Apple iPad accounted for more than 91% of the tablet applications of its 2,000+ corporate customers.

iPad Business Benefits

Perhaps the reason for such a dramatic uptake can be understood if you look at all the benefits an iPad offers in the workplace.

From an administration point of view Apple provides management tools such as the Apple Configurator and the Volume Purchasing Program to assist IT staff with device management and configuration. An increasing number of third party Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools have also emerged to offer greater control over deployment and management across the enterprise.

In terms of security, IOS offers desirable built in features such as support for secure VPNs, integration with Exchange and WPA2 WIFI encryption.

From an end user point of view an iPad is very easy to use and it's fast loading and high quality graphics make the device ideal for customer presentations on the go; a great asset given the increasing mobility of today’s workforce. Battery life is an important consideration too, and the new iPad Air promises 10 hours but actually delivers up to 12 hours of battery life, which is more than enough for the average business day.

Certainly, popularity of the iPad as a consumer device has also impacted the enterprise, particularly through BYOD (bring your own device) programs.

But the biggest advantage of the iPad for business is the apps. There are more than half a million iPad-optimized apps available, both off the shelf and fully customizable to suit any business needs. Add to this the emergence of HTML5 and web based applications and the iPad makes a compelling choice for the enterprise.

It’s All About the Apps

Standard iPad apps such as Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders and Notes give mobile employees all the basic tools they need to conduct business wherever they are. Customized apps can also be developed to automate workflows, improve productivity and create new and exciting customer solutions.

Our own iPad app, TTerm for iPad, offers enterprise grade terminal emulation for a wide variety of terminals and has been developed to provide the same high quality and fully implemented emulations found in our desktop product TTWin, for a tablet based environment.

TTerm for iPad is available as a number of separate apps, each designed to support a specific set of terminals. From AS/400 systems (TTerm 5250), 3270 based hosts (TTerm 3270), AIX and UNIX hosts (TTerm Plus), through to specialist terminals required by hosts such as HP NonStop /Tandem and Stratus (TTerm Pro). TTerm features include multiple-session capability, custom hotspots for touch interaction, custom on-screen keyboards and support for wireless keyboards.

With all of this versatility and functionality available in one sleek handheld device that weighs less than half a kilogram, it’s really not hard to see why the Apple iPad is becoming an indispensable tool for business on a rapidly expanding scale.

TTerm for iPad® is a range of comprehensive enterprise grade terminal emulation apps for iPad device.
