Microsoft’s venerable web browser, Internet Explorer is being discontinued.
Whilst a replacement, Microsoft's Edge, was released in 2015, for those that still use Internet Explorer the date is fast approaching when Microsoft will forcibly retire its obsolete web browser product.
As of June 15, 2022 Internet Explorer will no longer receive security updates. In fact, for most users Internet Explorer will not even run and any attempts to open the browser will simply be redirected to Edge.
Why Is This Important for Web Based Terminal Emulation?
Internet Explorer had several features which vendors took advantage of to deliver browser based terminal emulator solutions, specifically support for Java Applets and Active X. We've talked about this before.
Support for Java Applets has been removed from every available modern browser other than Internet Explorer. As for Active X, as a Microsoft technology it was never really supported outside Microsoft's own browser software and the feature was not brought across to Internet Explorer's replacement, Microsoft Edge.
Don’t Rely on Compatibility Modes!
With the imminent demise of Internet Explorer, should your organization try to continue using a Java based or ActiveX based web terminal emulator your choices will be limited to running in a special compatibility mode of Microsoft Edge.
