According to IBM’s CIO Greg Lotko1, IBM’s innovative approach towards its mainframes has led to 25 years of remarkable achievements in the area. The latest IBM mainframe, the zEnterprise System, reflected the company’s approach to innovation at all levels. The System z has the fastest chip in the industry and incorporates hybrid computing capacity and IBM middleware optimisation.
Lotko said that when used correctly, the System z delivers the best price performance of any computer system. System z runs optimally even when many thousands of MIPS, programs, applications, and data are running simultaneously. He noted that some clients have obtained as much as 10 years of uninterrupted operation on in their IBM-built mainframe systems.
Lotko said that the System z’s hybrid capacity has allowed it to integrated with Linux and has been enabled by specialty processors. This in turn has allowed IBM’s clients such as Marist College in New York (education and research), and Banca Carige (banking), to be more innovative.
Lotko said new features and tools such as IBM zAware, Flash Express, and Crypto Express4S boosted security and improved efficiency and operations. He stated that IBM will continue to seek a path of innovation for its mainframe systems.
