Seamlessly move from one device to another whilst maintaining your host connection with TTerm Connect, web to host terminal emulator.
What Is Device Transfer?
TTerm Connect is a web-based terminal emulator with a server component that handles the host connections and a lightweight but fully featured user interface which runs in a web browser. As such, end users can access TTerm Connect through almost any device with a modern web browser, from traditional desktop computers, laptops and thin clients to more portable devices like phones, tablets and handheld scanners.
Device transfer is a feature of TTerm Connect which allows a user to switch between devices and seamlessly bring their host sessions with them.
It's useful for those users who have reason to switch between devices when moving location or as part of their daily activities.
How Does It Work?
Device transfer is initiated by logging into TTerm Connect on a new device with the user's account credentials. Once authenticated the user will be presented with a list of previous logins on other devices (which we call desktops) and the sessions open on each of those desktops.
The user can choose to transfer all of the sessions belonging to a desktop into the new login or import individual sessions selectively.
Each session that is transferred to the new TTerm Connect login will be removed from the origin device and appear in the new desktop. Notifications of transfer will appear in the origin desktop.
If the user chooses to bring the entire desktop across to the new login, meaning they transfer all available sessions belonging to that desktop, then the TTerm Connect instance on the origin device is automatically logged out.
Once sessions are imported into the new desktop the user can immediately interact with the host systems and pick up exactly where they left off.
How Long Is a Session Maintained by TTerm Connect?
Most often device transfer is initiated because a user has switched from using one device to another. However it can also occur if a user has logged out of one device and, at a later time perhaps hours or even days later, logs into TTerm Connect again.
When a user’s host session is running in TTerm Connect but the user is not logged in anywhere we call it a detached session.
The ability of TTerm Connect to maintain a user’s detached session and its host connection even though it is not being interacted with in a web browser is called session persistence.
Session Persistence
Exactly how long a detached session persists is entirely dependent on how TTerm Connect has been configured by an Administrator. By default a detached session is kept alive for only five minutes, after which it is cleaned up and deleted, preventing the needless consumption of system resources and license entitlements.
Alternately, it's possible to configure session persistence and allow a detached session to be maintained for up to a week. This means a user could use device transfer on a Monday to return to a session they last worked with on a Friday, even if they are in a different office or location.

Security and Device Transfer
For obvious reasons device transfer is limited to named user accounts, that is, users who are registered directly in TTerm Connect or through services like Active Directory. TTerm Connect can be configured to allow guest (anonymous) access but those users cannot make use of the device transfer feature. Guest user sessions do not persist once a guest user has logged out of TTerm Connect.
