How Do I Share Configurations Between iPads?

A useful TTerm for iPad feature is the ability to import and export saved host connection settings between devices.

 This article describes copying a SINGLE host connection.

There are several options for managing configuration deployment and sharing within TTerm for iPad. For information on other management and deployment options please refer to this knowledgebase article.

Exporting

First configure the required connections on a single iPad. Once you are satisfied with the connection settings to your host system follow these steps to export the configuration settings.

  1. From the connections screen tap the saved connection item you wish to export. A menu bar will be displayed with the options Edit Settings, Duplicate and Export. Tap Export.
  2. At this point, if your saved connection incorporates an SSH key you will be prompted to include/exclude this from the export. Please consider your personal or corporate security policies before including an SSH key for export.
  3. TTerm for iPad will now place a copy of your saved configuration on your iPad in a place where it can accessed through iTunes or other tools. Repeat step 1 and 2 for each saved connection you wish to export.

At this point, if you're using macOS device follow these steps:

  1. Connect your iPad device to your computer.
  2. On your Mac open a Finder window.
  3. Connect your iPad to your computer with a USB cable.
  4. Select your device in the Finder.
  5. Click the Files tab to see a list of apps that can share files.
  6. Click the triangle next to TTerm.
  7. Browse to your saved connection where the name is <your connection name>.ttexp and copy/move as required. You are now finished exporting a saved connection.

The following steps only apply to macOS Mojave or earlier:

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Connect your iPad device to your computer with a USB cable.
  3. In iTunes select your device and open the Apps tab.
  4. Scroll down to File Sharing.
  5. Select TTerm (or the name of your TTerm app, for example TTerm 3270) from the list of Apps.
  6. Browse to your saved connection file and click the Save to... button. The file name is <your connection name>.ttexp. Your saved connection file is now saved to your computer.

The following steps apply only to Windows devices:

  1. Download and install the office the official Apple Devices app for Windows from the Microsoft store. More information on the support.apple.com/en-au/guide/devices-windows/mchl5ded2763/windows .
  2. Launch the Apple Devices app.
  3. Connect your iPad to your computer with a USB cable.
  4. In Apple Devices select your device and open the Apps menu option.
  5. Select the TTerm app from the list of Apps.
  6. Select the relevant file or files from the list of available files and click Save to save the configuration file to your computer. Each file will be named <your connection name>.ttexp.
Importing

Now that you have exported one or more saved connections to your computer you can share that connections with one or more iPads. To import a saved connection configuration use the method outlined above that is most appropriate for your device or platform. For MacOS devices, follow these steps:

  1. On your Mac open a Finder window.
  2. Connect your iPad to your computer with a USB cable.
  3. Select your device in the Finder.
  4. Click the Files tab to see a list of apps that can share files.
  5. Click the triangle next to TTerm (or the name of your TTerm app, for example TTerm 3270) and copy the .ttexp file you previously exported to this location.
  6. If you wish to import more than one saved connection configuration, repeat step 5 for each .ttexp file.
  7. On your iPad, launch TTerm for iPad and browse to the Connections screen. At the top right of screen you will see an Import button. Tap this and TTerm for iPad will import all the saved connections you added to the device to your list of Saved Connections. Once the import is complete, the Import button will no longer be available.
